Orange Basil Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule can be considered a bit of an odd combination and to some, the idea of mixing vodka and beer may even sound like a cautionary rhyme (beer before liquor, never been sicker?).

But the union of spicy ginger beer, freshly squeezed lime juice, and clean cut vodka poured over ice is SO delicious and irresistibly refreshing. The Moscow Mule is made for sunny afternoons well spent- and believe me, I've tested it on several occasions!

While I love the original recipe, I always like to experiment with new flavour combinations, and since I'm super excited for summer herbs and citrus fruits, this cocktail is a lighter and even MORE refreshing version of the original cocktail.

This cocktail is a great alternative which uses sparkling water instead of ginger beer. Which may even make it healthy? Okay maybe not, but at least it's gluten-free..

Using two simple syrups, one with fresh organic basil and the other with fresh ginger, this flavour combination still has the classic kick that you would expect from a Mule, but it also has a beautiful and earthy herbaceousness from the basil.


Orange Basil Moscow Mule

Per cocktail:
1/2 Orange
1/2 Lime
1/2 oz Ginger Simple Syrup
1/2 oz Basil Simple Syrup
2 oz Vodka
Sparkling Water
1-2 Fresh Basil Leaves (For Garnish)
Lime & Orange Slices (For Garnish)

Fill a cocktail shaker half way with ice. Squeeze the orange and lime juices into the shaker*. Add the simple syrups and vodka and shake until well combined. Pour into a copper mug brimming with ice and then top with sparkling water. Garnish with basil leaves on top of the ice, and one slice each of lime and orange for the rim of the glass.

*I like to throw the squeezed fruit chunks in to the shaker to optimize citrusy goodness.
