The Smoke and Sage

Last month, a lot of people were complaining that January was the longest month ever.

But for me, February seems to be dragging on so slowly (ironic, I know...).

While it feels like Spring should be just around the corner, the weather seems to be getting colder and colder.

After wind-chills of -20 this week (which is unheard of in the South Okanagan) I was finally able to go out and enjoy a brisk walk and some much needed sunshine today.

I love getting in a really good winter walk or hike before coming home to enjoy a cocktail or two... at least that way I feel like I really earned it!

While this cocktail is best served over ice, this Whisky based recipe is sure to warm you up on even the coldest of Winter days!

The liquid smoke compliments the Whisky well, and adds a nice hickory component reminiscent of a campfire at the cottage on a cold day.

Sweet sage and orange citrus help to clean this cocktail up and add some more complexity.

Whether you're out enjoying some winter activities, or hibernating in your house until it reaches above 10 degrees, snuggle up and enjoy The Smoke and Sage cocktail!

The Smoke and Sage
Per cocktail

2 oz of Whisky
1/2 oz freshly squeezed orange juice
1/2 oz sage simple syrup
3-4 drops liquid smoke
1 orange peel
1-2 sage leaves

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add Whisky, orange juice, sage simple syrup, and liquid smoke. Shake ingredients until well combined and then strain into glass over ice. Twist the orange peel over the cocktail and then use it in the cocktail as a garnish. Top with 1-2 sage leaves.

This cocktail pairs well with brisket, beef stew, and other hearty meat dishes - so it's the perfect winter indulgence!
